Maureen Holohan is the author of the Broadway Ballplayers series - books written about a group of middle school girls who enjoy sports and are good friends.
Ms. Holohan described her experiences at Northwestern University where she was a journalism student and a member of the Wildcat basketball team.
Following her graduation. Ms. Holohan tried to catch on with several international professional basketball teams, but injuries cut her career short.
Ms. Holohan said she then moved to "Plan B", writing books with main characters who are girl athletes, a type of book she found has not been written.
Publishers were reluctant to take on a new author, she said, so she ended up starting her own company to produce and sell her books. As she began to find success with her books, publishers started contacting her. She has sold over 50,000 books in the past 18 months.
Writing books is not easy, however. Ms. Holohan said she rewrote her first novel thirteen times before being satisfied with it. It took eight times for her second novel and four or five times for the last several books.
Ms. Holohan has currently published five books and is working on her sixth and seventh books. The fifth book in the series has been nominated for a National Book Award.
