THE CALL OF

The Call of the Wild is a book about Buck.  Buck is a dog that was stolen from his loving master Judge Miller and taken as a sled dog during the Gold Rush in Alaska.  In this experience Buck learns to be independent and to respect and fear a man with a club.  On this trip north, Buck has to deal with many problems.  I found this book to be action-filled, yet sad.

There were many good elements in this book: for example, the way Jack London describes details of Buckís surroundings, the cold 50 below days, the hard postal runs, the tension among the dogs, and the concern by the men who drove the sleds.  Also, the way London described the fights between the dogs was thrilling .  it was as if we were standing there watching the fight, feeling the fear and pain of the defeated dog.

Aside from the good elements, there were some parts that made me feel uncomfortable.  The constant flow of human characters and the violence among the dogs were difficult to follow, and it wouldnít hurt to have a little less violence.

If I were going to recommend this book, I would recommend it to someone who likes action but could still handle violence and sadness.  I also think you might like how the story is from the dogís point of view, and how it was as though he had feelings of a human, for example, how Buck uses thinking skills to conquer his fighting opponents and felt pride after succeeding.

This book taught me two lessons: first, to respect a man with a club, which for us means to be careful of those people who are stronger and have weapons. And second, I learned to work as a team with others.  I watched Buck worked his way to the top and to be the leader, which taught me to do my best to succeed.
