Call of the Wild is a story about
a dog named Buck who is kidnapped from his home in Santa Clara Valley,
California. He was taken to the Klondike and mistreated with club
and whip. He soon learns how to survive and is put to work as a sled
dog. He switches owners many times on his trip up north. He
makes many friends and a couple of enemies along the way. I think
this book is pretty good but itís not the best book Iíve ever read.
My favorite parts of the story are the many conflicts Buck faces. These conflicts range from getting kidnapped from his home in Santa Clara Valley, to having to watching his back against Spitz (his rival dog), or to having to decide against his favorite master or his wolf friends. Some of the other conflicts include being beaten, overworked, and forced to spend cold nights in the snow. I liked this book because of the good action sequences.
I disliked the amount of action in the middle of the story. For example, most of the middle of the book is switching owners and pulling the sled. A couple of exceptions to this are the fight with Spitz, the death of Hal, Charles, and Mercedes, and the finding of John Thorton. The action in this book is great, once you get to it.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the outdoors, the Klondike Gold Rush, animals, or anyone who just likes a good book. I enjoyed reading this book very much. Even though I enjoyed the book, I would not read the book again. Anyone who read the book probably enjoyed as much as I did.
What are the lessons I learned from this book? The first lesson I learned is no matter how different the area is that you can always adapt. The second and last I learned is that you can overcome any obstacle that comes in your way, no matter how big it is. I learned these lessons just as Buck learned the way of the club and fang.
