REQUIREMENTS

ALTOONA MIDDLE SCHOOL TUTORING PROGRAM
"Youth - Helping - Youth"

Dear Tutor,
Tutoring will be a unique, trying, and fun experience.  This endeavor is a very serious commitment on your part.  You will not only be assisting teachers, but you will also be helping other kids.

Simply put, tutoring involves three major things:

1. Attendance: You must be at your job.  Attendance is taken as in any other class, via e- mail.
2. Model Behavior: Your behavior on the job must be a model for other teacher/classroom rules and follow them.  Tutors follow rules, are fair to others, and encourage kids to do their best.  You will be successful if you follow the rules.  Children are looking to you for direction; this includes how you act and talk and what you talk to them about, as well as your attitude.  Remember, you have a job and you must set a good example.  They will treat you as you treat them.  You can help kids feel better and get enjoyment out of learning.
3. Encourage and smile at people you work with.  If problems arise, talk with your supervising teacher or see your tutor director.  If children misbehave, ask them to please stop and/or ask them, "What are you doing?  Is that helping you or me?"  If the problem continues, talk to the teacher.  Tell the child(ren) you will have to do this if the problem isn't worked out ó then DO IT.

No Grades are given to middle school tutors because your schedule does not usually allow you "full-time" work and each quarter your schedule changes.

PLEASE:

 1. Introduce yourself with a handshake.

 2. Remember "Model Behavior" is vital on your part.

 3. Remeber encouragement is "King".

 4. Read the handbook (if necessary).

 5. Let your teacher know what time you will be working and leaving.

 6. Ask questions of your teacher.

 7. Any other questions, ask Mr. Wagener.

A Tutor
Praises
Tells the children good things about themselves
Tries to understand how the child feels
Expresses concern and acts interested in the tutee
Observes school rules
Is considerate of teacher's time
 

A tutor does not
Berate or belittle
Act cold or indifferent
Criticize the teacher
Miss any tutoring unless he or she is ill
Allow tutoring sessions to run overtime too often
Allow the tutee to disturb others
Interrupt teacher's class time unnecessarily
