"Readers are Leaders"
Altoona Middle School
7th Grade Reading Course Description

In seventh grade reading, students continue to move from the basic skills they learned in elementary school to more sophisticated kinds of reading strategies they need as they become independent learners. The class focuses on reading engaging literary selections on a variety of topics. Both novels and informational books are included as well as multimedia materials. Students are encouraged to develop their own reading interests through regular use of the library and to see reading as a lifelong pursuit. Materials are provided at a variety of reading levels to accommodate student needs and an accelerated curriculum is used for qualifying students.

The course is divided into units about topics students are also studying in classes such as math, science and geography.  Often students will work on a topic in several different classes at the same time. Each unit has benchmark skills in comprehension, vocabulary and critical thinking. These benchmarks correspond to the Wisconsin State Standards for Reading and English.

Students demonstrate what they have learned through projects for each unit. Projects range from letters to their role models, to creating webpages, to presenting in a "living history museum" for the community. Samples of student work can be seen on the reading home page.
