This book is about a 16 year old boy, Carl Staggers. Carl is an electronic whizz, and lives with his mom. His mom is an alcoholic who works at a bar and brings men home. Carl hopes to earn an engineering degree by using his good grades, and from the he earned by selling stolen car radios he has fixed in the workshop set up in his bedroom. Carl's mom gets arrested for driving drunk, and she is sent to a clinic. Carl is sent to stay with some of his relatives, up country. He is later caught in the stolen stereo scam and goes back to the city to face charges. Carl, with the help of a social worker, confronts the fact of his mother's alcoholism and how it has effected his life & personality.
