Altoona Fire Department
By: Erika H

Altoona has had quite a history of fires in its past. The Altoona fire department started out small. Its was run by volunteer workers. The volunteers didn't have many supplies. For a fire in September, 1894 they only had:

1 Hand engine end hose cart combined
1 hook and ladder
150 feet of a hose that was 2 inches wide
6 water barrels on wheels.
*The water supply had been listed as wells and cisterns
The years following this fire Altoona called in help from the Eau Claire Fire Department for major  fires. Over the years Altoona fire department has become more efficient.
