When Altoona was first established, the citizens didn't have a post office. The way they got mail was to go to the Eau Claire post office. This was not convenient for the people because it was three miles away by train and an even longer way by road. On December 4, 1882 Altoona built its own post office. After that first office there were two more that burned down. The present building was constructed in 1957.
