The Ojibwe Story of Creation

The Ojibwe people have many stories.  Usually the stories tell of a moral or how something came to be.  The story I'm going to tell you is just one of many that tell about how the Earth was created.

Once there was a large flood, covering the Earth.  The animals had nowhere to go, since there was no land.  Nanabohzo saw some animals.  He told the animals to dive and bring some Earth back to him.  Three animals tried.  The loon, beaver, and the otter.  They drowned because it was so deep.  Finally, the muskrat tries.  He also drowns but Nanabohzo saw some mud in the muskrat's paw.  Nanabohzo took it and created land.
