Few people could imagine the devastation which would be caused by the earthquake and resulting fires in San Francisco in 1906. At 5:13 a.m. on April 18, its citizens were violently awakened by the shaking. Thousands died and hundreds of thousands lost their homes. It would not be the last of the tremors to strike this area.
